The Blue Grotto is one of Malta's most photographed natural wonders. Located on the southern coast near the fishing village of Wied iż-Żurrieq, this series of sea caves creates spectacular light effects in crystal-clear waters.
What Makes It Special
The grotto's name comes from the vivid blue phosphorescence of the water, caused by sunlight reflecting off white sandy seabed through underwater cave openings. The color is most intense in morning light (9am-noon).
Boat Tours
Small traditional boats (luzzu) take visitors into the caves. Tours last 20-25 minutes and cost €10 per person. Operates daily when sea conditions permit (usually April-October). Tours may cancel in rough weather.
