In Malta, only tourist guides licensed by the Malta Tourism Authority may guide visitors around museums, churches and heritage sites. Book a licensed private guide if you want in-depth commentary inside places like St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace or the megalithic temples.

A private driver is the better fit if you mainly want to see a lot in one day, at your own pace. Your driver takes you between sights, waits while you explore and shares local tips along the way. Many guests combine the two: a driver for the day and a licensed guide for one or two key sites.

What is included in a private Malta tour?

A private tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle for your group only, pickup and drop-off at your hotel, apartment or the cruise port, and an itinerary you can change on the day. Licensed guiding, entry tickets and meals are extras unless the listing says otherwise.

Sample private tour itineraries

Half day (4-5 hours): Valletta's Upper Barrakka Gardens and St John's Co-Cathedral, then Mdina's walls and cathedral square. Ideal for an arrival day or a short cruise call.

Full day (8 hours): add Marsaxlokk for a harbour lunch, the Blue Grotto viewpoint and Ħaġar Qim temples, finishing at Dingli Cliffs for sunset. For history lovers, swap the coast for the Three Cities and the Tarxien Temples.

Booking tips

Book at least 48 hours ahead in summer, and earlier for cruise days, when private guides and larger vehicles are in demand. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum has very limited daily tickets and often sells out weeks in advance, so book it separately before you plan the rest of the day.
